Here’s To You

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

We have begun a new gift board at the bar. It’s called, “Here’s to you…” It works like this; if you want to send a gift to someone, you simply pay for it and tell your server to write it on the board. When the recipient arrives they get a nice surprise. It is a creative and unique way to share some holiday giving to loved ones, co-workers, friends or business networking. Happy holidays.

Curious - why do chefs wear clogs?

So am I, so I inquired around our kitchen and did some internet research to come up with answers like, tradition, foot and back comfort, traction, fashion, tallness and safety (you can pull your feet out quickly in case hot liquids fall on your feet).  All of these sound plausible, but if you have another good reason, please let me know and next time you are in check out their footwear. (the zoo is a good seat for viewing the chefs work their magic)

Wine News

Wine gossip…. When Harvest Vine wine distributors were purchased by Odom, they sold off most of their inventory at great prices. As a result, we were able to pick up a large quantity of fantastic wine at great prices that we intend to pass on to you.
Here are just a few of the liquid purple gems that will be slipped into our list soon. Keep in mind, these are very limited and will go fast.

Klipsun Vineyards, Wilridge Merlot 91 -  One of the best surprises from the Washington State Red Mountain area for this vintage. This wine is a perfect example of how fruit from a low yield year can be created with the foresight and patience in mind to be laid down to blossom 15 years later. Kudos to winemaker, Paul Beveridge for this complex result.   p.s. needs to breathe about 15 to 30 minutes. Fantastic with duck pate and a cheese plate.
Caymus 06 Napa Cab - always amazing, a bit pricey but worth every penny. This very dark opaque purple wine opens with a very inviting vibrant black cherry bouquet. On the palate, the wine is smooth, well balanced, with savory and delicious dried black cherry flavors with hints of black raspberries as well. The finish is dry and its well managed tannins fade away very nicely. Great with steak and wild mushrooms.

Domaine Vincent Girardin Pommard Les Vignots 2004 -  My personal latest favorite because, like so many French wines, the great balance of fruit and tannin lends well to pairing with a large variety of food. The transparent musty expression of “le gout de terroir” (the taste of soil) from the Cote-d’Or region is to be appreciated the best with lamb or pork and, bonus, the price is reasonable.

Come and get it!
Epilogue…Some of the guys from Harvest Vine (Mike Wiley, etc) have started their own boutique distributorship called, Click and have come out loaded with a small but mighty list, a talent for great finds and the passion to succeed. I love competition.

Spokane #9

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

I received the following from Pam Scott at Spokane Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau:
US News has ranked Spokane as the #9 best place to retire citing low taxes and cost of living as the main criteria. They included a nice photo too. Yeah Spokane!
